DEI or Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity training has gained popularity over the past decade. Some are skeptical of its efficacy and many others in this part of the world view it as a ‘Western import’. Regardless, Singapore has substantial diversity — whether it is because of the population's race, religion, immigrant background or a range of other characteristics. While laws policing how individuals react to diversity can be well implemented, training the population to better navigate tension points that arise from diversity is important. How do we design diversity trainings for a multi-cultural environment governed by Asian values? Is Singapore ‘woke’ enough?
The workshop will touch on the development of training programmes that IPS conducts in educational, business and public service settings as part of the IPS Programme on Race, Religion and Intergroup Cohesion. We share what frameworks and tools have helped our participants recognise the presence of racism, out-group discrimination and their active role in combating behaviours that threaten social harmony and build greater inclusion. Participants of this workshop will be able to experience some of these components.
