The government has already enacted several laws to regulate the Internet and more are in the pipeline. However, it is also encouraging self-regulation that will lead to more civility in cyberspace. In other countries, self-governing includes terms of service agreed to by content providers, community-initiated codes of conduct or even simple rules of engagement by individual bloggers. IPS is organising this closed-door discussion to generate a frank and robust dialogue among stakeholders about such options. It will examine if community-driven measures such as codes of conduct work elsewhere, and if so, what lessons could apply here. Editors of prominent websites will also discuss their current practices to ensure good Net etiquette.
The event will be attended by practitioners from alternative and mainstream media, civil society leaders, academics and government officials.
