About The Programme

Climate change, geopolitical tensions and advanced technologies are shaping many of the complex global challenges we are facing today. It is important for corporate and political leaders to understand the urgency of pressing issues facing the business world and the society at large, and that it is a responsibility to respond in an impactful and enduring way. They need to better define, communicate and apply their values and principles, as well as identify opportunities and constantly innovate to not only grow their businesses but also benefit the communities.

Who is it For

Suitable for current undergraduate and postgraduate students who wish to gain an overview of world’s developments and learn about the qualities and competencies of modern leaders should possess in order to be effective and successful in the VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world of today.

Students should also have a good command of spoken and written English.

What to expect:

Participants will attend 6 seminars conducted by senior academics and industry speakers over 5 days:

Leadership for the VUCA World
In a VUCA world which stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous, success can be achieved by adopting a mindset and skillsets that allows one to navigate through the constantly changing landscape. This session will share how leaders can effectively lead in a VUCA world being resilient and innovative.

The Belt Road Initiative (BRI) and ASEAN Opportunities
Ever since its launch in 2013, the BRI has become a global focus. This session examines the geopolitical, economic and social impact of the BRI, taking stock of key developments, persistent myths and future orientations. Participants will also learn about how BRI impacted the Southeast region.

Battling Climate Change
Climate change is disrupting national economies and affecting lives. This session will examine the effect of the Paris Agreement which aims to reinforce the global response to the threat of climate change and strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change. It will also discuss some global measures and initiatives in addressing global warming and climate change.

World Economic Outlook
The global economy is facing significant challenges with US’ President Donald Trump imposing tariffs to countries worldwide. The adverse effect of geopolitical conflicts and tensions is taking a toll on countries’ economic performance. This session will explore how the world economic situation will affect countries and organisations and examine how to stay vigilant amidst an economic turbulent.

Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Disruption
AI is a key enabler for disruptive innovation that leads to game changing products and services. For examples, AI enabled sharing economy as a new business model, autonomous vehicles and ChatGPT. What else can AI bring to the table? How can it further change our lives? How can we leverage on this technology positively? This session will examine these questions.

Business Innovation for a Better World
In a world riddled with uncertainties and surrounded by overwhelming information, how can we navigate the complexities of global business? This session delves into the essence of statistical proficiency required to make astute business decisions and timely strategic shifts. It will also explore the analytical arsenal to spot trends and harness statistics pivotal for economic and business landscapes.

Students will be required to complete a specially designed quiz for each topic to test how well they understand the knowledge shared by the speakers.

Dr. Leong Ching, Vice Provost (Student Life), National University of Singapore and Associate Professor, NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy

Dr. Leong Ching is Vice Provost (Student Life) and Associate Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy Natio... nal University of Singapore. Dr. Leong’s research interests include water policies, environmental behaviour, public sector reform, and communications strategies. Her current research project includes the use of smart meter to motivate reduced water use, negative spillovers in response to non-economic incentives, and the impact of narratives on governance. She also researches on Asian countries and cities including China, Jakarta and Manila, in addition to Singapore. Dr. Leong’s teaching interests include Public Management, Leadership and Logic. She teaches the core governance classes of the Master in Public Administration, a module on “Urban Water Governance” as well as policy communications and behavioural economics for policy making. She also writes widely on water issues in the media with articles in national newspapers and specialised water journals. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory (JPART), Global Environmental Change, and International Journal of Water Resources Management. Her commentaries have been published in The New York Times, International Herald Tribune, The Jakarta Post, China Daily, as well as newspapers in Singapore.  Show more >

Dr. Gu Qingyang, Associate Professor, NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy

Dr. Gu Qingyang is an Associate Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) at the National Universit... y of Singapore (NUS). He obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Master of Economics from NUS, and Master of Higher Education Management from Peking University. Before joining LKYSPP, he had taught economics and policy analysis at NTU from 2000 to 2009 and conducted research in Chinese economy and policy from 1997 to 2000 in the East Asian Institute of NUS. Dr. Gu’s research interests lie in three broad areas: Chinese economy, Singapore public policy and urban development. His current research focuses on the economic relations between China and ASEAN, and global infrastructure development. He has done significant research work in his research areas and his publications appear in the Economic Modelling, Journal of International Money and Finance, Applied Financial Economics, Singapore Economic Review, China: An International Journal, China Economic Quarterly. Dr. Gu has taught a wide range of courses spanning across economics, policy analysis and urban development to both undergraduate and postgraduate students across four universities since 1982. Dr. Gu is very active in providing professional trainings and consulting services for various government agencies and companies in Greater China and Singapore. He has 24 years of experiences on establishing and operating five China-related postgraduate and executive education programmes at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy of NUS and NTU. Dr. Gu is currently the Chair of the Master in Public Administration and Management (MPAM) Programme and the Senior Fellow of Executive Education at the the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. Dr. Vu Minh Khuong, Practice Professor, NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy

Dr. Vu Minh Khuong is a Practice Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (National University of Singapore... ). His research and teaching concentrate on economic development and policy analysis. Dr. Vu has published three books and more than 50 papers in prestigious academic journals, including Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Scandinavian Journal of Economics, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Information Economics and Policy, Telematics and Informatics, Telecommunication Policy, Journal of Structural Change and Economic Dynamics, Energy Policy. He also frequently writes press articles for newspapers and other media, focusing on development policy issues. Dr. Vu is recognized among the top 2% of scientists worldwide for his significant academic impact. He (together with co-author Boyd Fuller) won the 2011 Best Article Award from the Public and Non-Profit Division of the Academy of Management (USA). He has also won the highest awards for research and teaching at the Lee Kuan Yew School: the LKY School Research Excellence Award (in 2012) and the LKY School Annual Teaching Excellence Award (in 2009 and 2011). Dr. Vu has provided extensive consulting and advisory services to international organisations and government agencies, including UNIDO, UNDP, IMF, World Bank, IFC, ILO, and APO. Before transitioning into academia, he had held various government positions in Vietnam, including Deputy Chief of the Haiphong City Government Office, Vice-Chairman of Dinh Vu Economic Zone, and Research Associate at the Prime Minister’s Advisory Commission.  Show more >

Dr. Laurence Liew, Director, AI Innovation, AI Singapore

Dr. Laurence Liew is the Director for AI Innovation at AI Singapore. He is the driving force behind AI Singapore’s impac... tful initiatives aimed at propelling AI adoption across industries and democratising AI knowledge for everyone. As Director of AI Innovation, he leads the 100 Experiments (100E) programme, fostering collaboration between AI researchers and industry partners to develop and deploy real-world AI solutions. He is also the architect of the acclaimed AI Apprenticeship Programme (AIAP), a unique talent development initiative equipping aspiring AI engineers with practical skills and industry experience. Dr. Liew’s passion for making AI accessible to all is evident in his leadership of the LearnAI initiative. Through programmes like AI for Everyone (AI4E) and AI for Industry (AI4I), he has empowered countless individuals with foundational AI knowledge, demystifying the technology and fostering a more inclusive AI ecosystem. His commitment to democratising AI extends beyond Singapore’s borders, as he co-chairs the Global Partnership on AI’s (GPAI) project on Broad Adoption of AI by SMEs, leading international efforts to empower businesses of all sizes with the transformative power of AI.  Show more >
