Chairman of LKYSPP Governing Board awarded by S'pore Government

Prof Wang Gungwu, Chairman of LKY School’s Governing Board, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in Singapore’s National Day honour roll this year.

Prof Wang received the award for his outstanding contributions to the research of Chinese and Southeast Asian histories. He chairs a number of research institutions, including the LKY School and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.

In his interview with Channel NewsAsia, Prof. Wang said: “I would actually like to see Singapore gain even more respect and admiration for its dedication to education of the young, to the recognition of human resources, in a world that is increasingly one of knowledge, where it’s knowledge-based.

“There’s no question — all the greatest developments in the world today are based on keeping up with the most advanced knowledge, and Singapore has been dedicated to that for a long time now. But to see that kind of achievement widely recognised, and the people of Singapore being proud of that achievement, is something that I really would like to see.”

The Meritorious Service Medal was instituted in 1962. It is awarded to persons who have performed within Singapore, service of conspicuous merit characterised by resource and devotion to duty, including long service marked by exceptional ability, merit and exemplary conduct.
