Dr Alex Tan is a Senior Research Fellow in the Economics and Business research cluster at the Institute of Policy Studies.

Alex is interested in how internationalisation and innovation in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and new ventures affect their survival and growth, in particular, the policy implications for Singapore SMEs. He has co-led a number of funded projects, including a European Commission study on strategies for cross-border research and development collaboration between European and Singapore companies, and a National Research Foundation study on the survival of high-technology start-ups in Singapore.

Alex’s current research has evolved to incorporate the role of personal and cultural values, as well as psychological factors in examining entrepreneurship outcomes. His recent work has been published in the Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research.

Previously, Alex was a faculty member at the University of Western Australia (with tenure) and Singapore Management University. He holds a PhD in International Management from the University of Hawaii Business School and a MA in Economics from the University at Buffalo.
