Profile

Rachel’s research deals with the Russian Far East as a contested frontier and the legacies of Northeast Asian imperialism on the region. More specifically, she is interested in the phenomenon of migrant nationalism, in which nationalist rhetoric and historical memories were “exported” alongside diaspora communities. This formed the basis for her doctoral thesis, “Among Ghosts and Tigers”, which examined the Chinese diaspora in the Russian Far East during the Russian Civil War and its opportunistic use of nationalist discourse. Her particular focus is on the late imperial, early soviet and Republican Chinese periods, and her work is heavily based on Chinese-language sources. She received a DPhil in History in 2016, and an MPhil in Russian and East European Studies in 2013, both from Oxford University.
