Mr Lim Chuan Poh was appointed Chairman A*STAR on 1 April 2007. Apart from serving on the Boards of NTU (since 2003), NRF (since 2006), Mr Lim also chairs the National Infocomm Security Committee (since 2010) and the Governing Board of Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (since 2013). Mr Lim is a Council Member of the Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum, a Member of Japan’s World Premier International (WPI) Initiative Program Assessment and Review Committee (both since 2007) and an Adjunct Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore (since 2013).

Prior to A*STAR, Mr Lim was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education (2003-2007) where he was responsible for the transformation of publicly-funded universities into autonomous universities, reviewed the university research framework that led to the creation of the Academic Research Council and a new Academic Research Funding Framework. Mr Lim also guided the establishment of the NUS-Duke Graduate Medical School at the Outram Campus. Before MOE, Mr Lim spent 23 years with the Singapore Armed Forces and last held the office of Chief of Defence Force holding a rank of Lieutenant-General.

Among the awards he has received are the Public Administration Medal, Gold (Military) and the Meritorious Service Medal (Military). He has also received the Legion of Merit (Degree of Commander) (USA) twice, conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science by Loughborough University, the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by Monash University, the Fellowship of Imperial College London, the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by the Arizona State University. In January 2009, Mr Lim was named as one of the eight key figures on the list of “People to Watch in 2009” by SCIENCE Magazine.

Mr Lim has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Mathematics and a Master of Arts from Cambridge University. He has a Masters in Business Administration (with distinction) from Cornell University and attended the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School in 2003.
