Political leaders cannot be trained, but must be found, says MM Lee [Read Online]
SINGAPORE: Political leaders cannot be trained, but must be found and be people with passion,
says Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew. And that's one reason why, unlike corporate leaders, they are so much harder to get.
Mr Lee was speaking on leadership transition and other issues in a wide-ranging dialogue session at

Move towards EET is good, but handle retirement savings with care
The draft direct taxes code unveiled earlier this month makes a beginning towards the EET (exempt-exempt-taxation)
treatment of savings, including those relating to retirement. This is consistent with widespread international practices,

Power and impending glory
by Kishore Mahbubani
The American dream is over. The Indian dream is arriving. Am I exaggerating? Of course, I
am. America will remain far more prosperous than India for decades to come (although
many now believe that the Indian Gross National Product (GNP) will surpass the American
GNP before 2050). Yet dreams are not about past or present realities. They are about
hopes and aspirations for the future. And a big shift in world history has occurred with so
few taking note of its implications. Many young Americans no longer believe that they will
experience the same improvement in living standards that their parents did. By contrast,
many young Indians believe that they will do much better than their parents.

Asia keeps the west’s betrayed faith

Before the current economic crisis exploded, most Asian policymakers and intellectuals believed that when it
came to the theory and practice of economic development, the west knew best. This conviction was justified. For
two centuries or more, western economies had far outperformed their own.
